First Full Disk Image From GOES-14

The latest Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite, GOES-14, provided its first visible full disk image of Earth on July 27, at 2:00 p.m. EDT. The prime instrument on GOES, called the Imager, is taking images of Earth with a 1 kilometer (km) or 0.62 mile resolution from an altitude of 36,000 km (22,240 miles) above Earth's surface, equivalent to taking a picture of a dime from a distance of seven football fields.

Moving The Integrated Cargo Carrier

The space shuttle remote manipulator system holds the Integrated Cargo Carrier-Vertical Light Deployable (ICC-VLD) for Mobile Translator relocate operations from worksite 7 to worksite 8 on the International Space Station. The flight day seven robotics exercises were sandwiched in between two days of extravehicular activity, part of the overall five scheduled spacewalks. high res (0.7 M) low res (62 K)

Moon Rock On Orbit

A moon rock brought to Earth by Apollo 11, humans' first landing on the moon in July 1969, is shown as it floats aboard the International Space Station. Part of Earth can be seen through the window. The 3.6 billion year-old lunar sample was flown to the station aboard Space Shuttle mission STS-119 in April 2009 in honor of the July 2009 40th anniversary of the historic first moon landing. The rock, lunar sample 10072, was flown to the station to serve as a symbol of the nation's resolve to continue the exploration of space. It will be returned on shuttle mission STS-128 to be publicly displayed. high res (1.0 M) low res (78 K)

Russian Space Cargo Droid Leaves Earth For the International Space Station

Russia has been sending Progress robot freighters with cargo to the International Space Station for more than a decade - and to its Mir and Salyut space stations for decades prior to that. They did it again today with Progress M-67 (also known as Progress 34P) routinely (yawn) as they have many times before. These photos (below) show part of the process of preparing these cargo droids for their trip.

Ground Penetrating Radar Deployed on Devon Island

Ground Penetrating Radar Antenna, brought to the HMP Research Station by Dr. Essam Heggy, a planetary scientist at NASA JPL, is rigged to the Mars-1 Humvee Rover. More images at the HMP photostream. Additional information at the HMP website.

EVA Reference Manual In Use On Orbit

Onboard Endeavour's forward flight deck, astronaut Christopher Cassidy, STS-127 mission specialist, looks over a reference manual as he plays an intravehicular support role to two space-walking astronauts (Dave Wolf and Tim Kopra), out of frame. The July 18 extravehicular activity kicks off a series of five spacewalks scheduled over the next several days. high res (1.2 M) low res (108 K)
