Let's Name the LCROSS Impact Crater After Walter Cronkite

Editor's note: The other night I started to Twitter that I thought it would be a good idea that the crater LCROSS will form should be named in honor of veteran space journalist Walter Cronkite who died the other day. Others joined in and repeated that idea.

Space Station Astronauts Transferring The Integrated Cargo Carrier

Space shuttle Endeavour Commander Mark Polansky and Pilot Doug Hurley are using the shuttle robotic arm to grab the Integrated Cargo Carrier - Vertical Light Deployable, or ICC-VLD. Polansky and Hurley will lift the 8,330-pound carrier from Endeavour's payload bay. The ICC-VLD is an aluminum pallet eight feet long, 13 feet wide and 10 inches thick that carries cargo on the top and bottom faces. For STS-127; it carries six replacement batteries for the Port 6 solar array and three on orbit spares - a Space-to-Ground Antenna (SGANT), Pump Module Assembly (PMA) and Linear Drive Unit (LDU).

Space Shuttle Execute Packages

Editor's note: Ever wonder how the Space Shuttle crews know what they are supposed to do on a moment to moment basis? Part of the answer can be seen in the daily "Execute Packages" that are sent up to the Shuttle in orbit from Mission Control in Houston. This graphic is one of many that comprise the crew's daily time line - in his case for FD04 - Flight Day 4. You can see STS-127's Execute Packages online at NASA.

Watching Visitors Dock at the ISS

Cosmonaut Gennady Padalka, commander; along with NASA astronaut Michael Barratt and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) astronaut Koichi Wakata, both flight engineers, undocked the Soyuz spacecraft at 4:26 p.m. (CDT) and docked to the Pirs Docking Compartment at 4:54 p.m. on July 2, 2009. high res (0.7 M) low res (103 K)

Editor's note: Notice the small version of "Gort" the robot from the classic 1951 SciFI film "The Day The Earth Stood Still".

OnOrbit Gear: Adjusting ISS Rack Coolant Loops

In this photo taken on 8 July 2009 NASA astronaut Michael Barratt, Expedition 20 flight engineer, works at a rotated rack in the Destiny laboratory of the International Space Station during in-flight maintenance (IFM) to adjust the periodic flow rate of manual flow control valves for coolant loops. high res (1.9 M) low res (107 K)
